A whoopie pie is made from a cake-like batter, usually chocolate, spooned onto baking sheets into mounds that bake into soft domes. Two cakes are joined with a creamy filling, traditionally based on marshmallow creme, shortening or butter and powdered sugar.

The result is moist and tender rather than crisp, more like cake than a cookie. Whoopie pies are strongly associated with New England, especially Maine, and with the Pennsylvania Dutch region, both of which claim them. Pumpkin, red velvet and oatmeal versions and fillings such as peanut butter or cream cheese are popular variations.
