A choco pie is a packaged snack made of two small, soft biscuit-cakes with a layer of marshmallow in between, enrobed in a thin chocolate coating. The style is similar to older American and British marshmallow sandwich cakes. It became famous in South Korea from the 1970s, where it is a hugely popular everyday snack, and it is now made by several companies in Asia and beyond.
Choco pies are individually wrapped and have a long shelf life. They are shared at school, work and military service, sometimes stacked with candles as an improvised birthday cake. Home bakers also make their own versions with sponge, homemade marshmallow and tempered chocolate.
