How the Food Arcade works

Rot or Not?

Six rounds of two photos of the same item from our Fresh Market Guide, one fresh and one past its best. Tap the fresh one. Each answer shows what to look for.

Guess the Grocery Price

Guess the typical shelf price of five baking staples at National Grocery Chain stores across the U.S. this month. Prices come from our Check a Price data and update with it. The closer you are, the more points you get.

Recipe Detective

One of our 4,000+ recipes, shown one ingredient at a time. Name it from four choices using as few clues as you can, then bake it.

Your progress

Streaks and points stay in this browser. There's nothing to sign up for, no prizes and no leaderboard. A new set of games starts every day at midnight Arizona time.

Looks are about quality, not safety

Rot or Not? is about choosing good produce at the store. USDA explains that there are two kinds of bacteria: spoilage bacteria, which make food look, smell or feel off, and pathogenic bacteria, which cause foodborne illness. Food that looks fine can still be unsafe if it was stored or handled badly, so a good look is never a safety check. Food that has spoiled should not be eaten. Game photos are illustrations made for our Fresh Market Guide. Prices are typical regular shelf prices for standard products and vary by brand, store and loyalty offers.
