How we pick
The scoring follows what gift-giving research says people actually appreciate, which is often not what givers expect.
1What they love counts most
Interests make up 35% of every score. In studies of real gift exchanges, people appreciated getting something they wanted more than a surprise the giver chose.
Gino & Flynn, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 20112Useful beats impressive
Givers tend to choose for the moment of unwrapping, while the person receiving it cares about using it. Usefulness and quality together make up 28% of the score.
Baskin, Wakslak, Trope & Novemsky, Journal of Consumer Research, 2014; Galak, Givi & Williams, Current Directions in Psychological Science, 20163Your budget is a ceiling, not a target
People don't appreciate a gift more because it cost more, so a pricier gift never ranks higher. Gifts well under your budget still score well.
Flynn & Adams, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 20094Keepsakes and shared moments for those closest to you
For partners and family, sentimental gifts and things to make or do together get a boost. Givers tend to underrate both, and shared experiences bring people closer.
Givi & Galak, Journal of Consumer Psychology, 2017; Chan & Mogilner, Journal of Consumer Research, 20175One complete gift, no filler
A small add-on can make a gift seem less generous, not more. That's why we suggest complete gifts instead of padded bundles.
Weaver, Garcia & Schwarz, Journal of Consumer Research, 20126Variety first, then your feedback
Your top six are always different kinds of gift. Tap "Not this one" to say a gift is too expensive, they already have it, or it's not their style, and the list changes right away. Shuffle picks fresh ideas from your 40 strongest matches.
How each gift is scored: what they love 35, quality 15, usefulness 13, occasion 12, relationship 10, gift style 10, budget fit 5. "More unusual" moves 20 points to one-of-a-kind finds. Every gift and every write-up was chosen by VanillaGoods.

Gift Finder questions
How does the Gift Finder choose gifts?
You answer up to six quick questions: who the gift is for, their age, the occasion, what they love, your budget and an optional style. Every one of our 1,000 gifts is then scored in your browser. What they love counts most (35%), followed by quality, usefulness, the occasion, your relationship, gift style and budget fit.
The top six are always different kinds of gift, and each one shows why it fits.
Does VanillaGoods earn money from these links?
Sometimes. As an Amazon Associate, VanillaGoods earns from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Commission is not part of the scoring formula. Our own vanilla, coffee and tea appear in a separate box labeled From the VanillaGoods shop.
Why don't I see a price for every gift?
Prices change often. We show an Amazon price only when we have checked it with Amazon within the last hour, together with the time it was checked. Otherwise each gift shows a price range, and Amazon shows the current price when you click through.
Is my information saved or shared?
There is no account, and we never ask for your name or email. Your answers and your saved list are kept in this browser on this device. A shortlist is shared only when you copy or send its link yourself.
Can I share my gift list?
Yes. Tap the heart on any gift to save it, then open your list to copy a link, send it or print it. Anyone with the link sees the same gifts.
Why is gender optional?
What someone loves predicts a good gift far better than gender, so gender never removes a gift from your results. If you choose one, it only changes the wording, such as "your sister" instead of "your sibling".
Is the Gift Finder for kids?
No, it is made for grown-up shoppers. Choosing Under 13 shows gifts picked for a grown-up to buy for a child. Alcohol-themed gifts never appear for the Under 13, 13-17 or 18-24 age groups, and you can switch them off for anyone.
As an Amazon Associate, VanillaGoods earns from qualifying purchases. Product names belong to their owners; our picks and write-ups are our own.
