Chocolate spread
A sweet, smooth chocolate-flavored spread made from sugar, cocoa, fat and often milk powder or nuts, especially hazelnuts, meant for bread, pastries and desserts.

- Chocolate, sugar and confectionery
Chocolate spreads stay soft at room temperature because they use liquid oils or nut pastes rather than just cocoa butter. Many popular versions blend cocoa with ground hazelnuts, a style that goes back to the Italian gianduja tradition of mixing chocolate with hazelnut paste. White chocolate, pistachio and dark chocolate versions are also common.
At home, toasted nuts are ground into a smooth paste and blended with melted chocolate, cocoa, powdered sugar and a pinch of salt. Bakers use chocolate spread to fill crêpes, croissants, cookie sandwiches and layer cakes, or swirl it into brownies and banana bread.
