Glutinous rice, also called sweet or sticky rice, is soaked for several hours, then steamed until tender and translucent. While still hot, it is mixed with warm coconut milk sweetened with sugar and seasoned with a pinch of salt, and left to absorb it until glossy and chewy.

It is served with fresh, fragrant mango and topped with a thicker, slightly salty coconut cream sauce. Toasted mung beans or sesame seeds are often sprinkled on top for crunch. In Thailand it is a favorite during the peak mango season in spring.
