The most familiar American birthday cake is a vanilla or yellow butter cake with chocolate or vanilla buttercream, or funfetti cake with sprinkles mixed into the batter. Layers are usually baked in 8 or 9-inch round pans, leveled, filled and frosted.
A thin crumb coat followed by a chilled final coat of frosting gives clean sides for piping and lettering.
