Also called: whipped topping

Whipped topping frosting uses non-dairy whipped topping, or sometimes whipped cream, as its base, which makes it much lighter and less sweet than buttercream. Many recipes fold in instant pudding mix, which thickens and stabilizes it, or beaten cream cheese for body and tang. Gelatin can also be added to help it hold its shape.

It is popular on poke cakes, sheet cakes, icebox cakes and strawberry desserts. The frosting is soft, so it spreads well but is not ideal for detailed piping or stacking tall layers. Cakes finished with it should be kept in the refrigerator and served cold.
