Also called: Linz cake, Linz tart, Linzer torte

Linzertorte is made from a short dough of flour, butter, sugar, egg and ground hazelnuts or almonds, flavored with cinnamon and often cloves or lemon zest. Most of the dough is pressed into a tart pan and spread with a thick layer of red currant or raspberry jam, and the rest is rolled or piped into a lattice across the top.

It is named after the city of Linz in Upper Austria and is often described as one of the oldest known cake recipes, with written versions going back to the 17th century. The tart keeps well and tastes even better after a day or two. Linzer cookies are a sandwich-cookie version of the same idea.
