Ice cream cone

A crisp, edible cone made of wafer or waffle, used to hold scoops of ice cream so they can be eaten by hand.

There are two main types. Cake cones are light, pale and molded with a flat bottom, while sugar cones and waffle cones are rolled from thin, sweet batter cooked on a patterned iron and shaped while hot. Waffle cones have a richer, more toasty flavor.

Edible cones were made in Europe in the 1800s and became widely popular in the United States in the early 1900s. At home, waffle cones can be made with a pizzelle or waffle cone iron and a cone-shaped roller.
