Cup-to-gram conversion

Translating a recipe's volume measurements in cups into weights in grams, which is more accurate because the same cup of an ingredient can weigh very different amounts.

Also called: cups to grams converter, cups to grams

One US cup holds about 240 ml, but its weight depends on the ingredient. Commonly used figures include about 120 to 125 g for a cup of all-purpose flour, about 200 g for granulated sugar, about 227 g for butter (two sticks) and about 237 g for water. These are guidelines, not exact rules.

The way you fill the cup changes the weight a lot. Flour scooped straight from the bag is packed down and can weigh 20% or more than flour spooned in and leveled. Converting a favorite recipe to grams once, then weighing on a kitchen scale, gives more consistent results.
