Cake boxes

Cake boxes are sturdy cartons sized to hold a finished cake and its board so it can be carried or stored without damage.

Cake boxes are the cartons bakeries and home decorators use to carry a finished cake. Extension decorating guides tell bakers to place the cake in a clean, sturdy box that fits the cake board or plate, because a box the size of the board keeps the cake from shifting.

They also advise choosing a box that fits the cake without squashing the top decorations, and storing the cake in a covered box out of direct sunlight. Special cake boxes can be bought from a craft or cake supply store, and a grocery store bakery may be willing to supply one.

A good box is tall enough to clear the frosting, has a flat, firm bottom, and closes without pressing on the cake. For travel, many bakers set the box on a flat surface in the car, such as the floor or a level seat, so it does not slide or tilt on the way to the party.
