Also called: cake drum
A cake board, also called a cake circle or cake drum, is a flat, sturdy base on which a cake is built, moved and displayed. Decorating manuals from university extension services list a flat plate or cake board among the basic supplies for showing off a finished cake.
The board does several jobs. A single layer can be set top down on it and frosted. It can serve as a large spatula for shifting a top layer onto the layer below. For a tiered cake, the bottom tier is placed on a sturdy base plate or board cut about four inches larger than the tier, leaving a border to decorate. A board that fits the cake also stops it sliding around inside a box during transport.
Boards are usually covered with foil or paper, or iced over, so the cake looks finished from every side.
