Banana split

An American ice cream dessert of a banana split lengthwise, topped with scoops of ice cream, sweet sauces, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry.

Banana split: A banana split in a long dish with three scoops of ice cream, sauces, whipped cream, nuts and cherries
  • Frozen desserts and sweet beverages
  • United States

The classic version uses three scoops, usually vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, set between the banana halves in a long, narrow dish often called a boat. Each scoop gets its own topping, such as chocolate or hot fudge sauce, strawberry sauce and crushed pineapple, followed by whipped cream, chopped nuts and maraschino cherries.

The banana split grew out of American soda fountains in the early 1900s, and several towns claim to have invented it. A ripe but firm banana works best, since it is sweet but holds its shape under the toppings.
