Pie dish

A round, shallow baking dish with sloping sides and a flat rim, made of glass, ceramic or metal, used to bake pies and some tarts.

  • Equipment, utensils and bakeware

Also called: pie plate

The standard US size is 9 inches across, and deep-dish versions hold more filling. Glass lets you check whether the bottom crust has browned, metal heats quickly for a crisp crust, and ceramic holds heat evenly and looks good at the table.

The rim supports a crimped or fluted edge. Baking the pie on a preheated sheet pan on a low rack helps the bottom crust cook through and catches any filling that bubbles over.
