Naked cake
A naked cake is a layer cake finished with little or no frosting on the sides, so the layers and filling show.

Also called: semi-naked cake
A naked cake is a layer cake that leaves its sides bare or only lightly scraped with frosting, so the sponge layers and fillings can be seen. A semi-naked cake carries a thin skim of frosting that lets some of the cake show through.
The cake introduction on the ckbk cookbook library says the style demands sturdy layers, even sides and a glossy surface so the cake looks balanced and elegant. Because the cut crumb is exposed, naked cakes dry out faster, and the same guide advises assembling them on the same day they are meant to be eaten.
Bakers often trim the layers level, brush them with a little syrup to hold moisture, and stack them with generous filling such as cream, jam or buttercream. Fresh berries, flowers or fruit slices finish the top. The look suits rustic and informal celebrations and wedding desserts.
