About the drive
Ashley River Road is an 11-mile stretch of SC 61 that follows the Ashley River northwest of Charleston, from Church Creek into Dorchester County. It is a two-lane road with live oaks arching overhead for long stretches.
The road runs through a historic district that traces the region's colonial and African American history. Three National Historic Landmarks sit along it: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Drayton Hall and Middleton Place. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site are nearby stops too.
Driving it takes about 25 minutes, but the house museums and gardens can fill a day or two. Each one keeps its own hours and charges its own admission.
