Each roll is made by wrapping a small square of enriched yeast dough around a spoonful of powidl, apricot jam or sweet cheese. The rolls are dipped in melted butter and packed close together in a baking dish, where they rise into each other and bake into a golden, pull-apart sheet.

They are often served warm with vanilla sauce. Buchteln are a classic of Viennese and Czech home cooking and appear in many children's stories from the region.
