About the drive

The Norris Freeway was built in the 1930s as the supply road for Norris Dam, the Tennessee Valley Authority's first hydroelectric project. It runs about 21 miles from Rocky Top southeast to Halls, through Anderson, Campbell and Knox counties.

The road crosses the top of the dam, and its bridges and other structures share a clean Art Moderne style. Norris Dam State Park has 1930s cabins, trails and the Lenoir Museum, and the planned town of Norris sits just off the route.

The rivers below the dam are known for trout fishing, and the lake draws boaters and swimmers. It's a short drive, easy to pair with a walk or a picnic in the park.
