About the drive
Newfound Gap Road is the main road across Great Smoky Mountains National Park, running 31 miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina. It climbs on steady curves to Newfound Gap, at 5,046 feet the state line and the lowest drivable gap through the park.
The road was designed for its views, with pull-offs, overlooks, stone walls and bridges from the 1930s. Stops include Carlos Campbell Overlook, the Chimneys picnic area, the Rockefeller Memorial at the gap, and the Mountain Farm Museum at Oconaluftee. Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) branches off near the top and is open in season.
There is no entrance fee, but you need a parking tag to park for more than 15 minutes. The road is open all year, weather permitting, and it is often much colder at the gap than in the valleys.
