Folar is a traditional Portuguese bread baked for Easter, with many regional versions. Portugal's national register of traditional products describes the folar of Vagos as a soft sweet bread flavored with lemon and cinnamon, made from wheat flour, yeast, eggs, sugar, butter and a little salt.
The dough is kneaded and left to rise, then shaped into rounds and rested again. Eggs boiled in onion skins are pressed onto the top, held down with crossed strips of dough, and the loaf is baked until golden. The eggs bake into the loaf and are eaten with it.
Other regions make their own folar, some sweet and some savory, so the shape, filling and flavor vary by village. In every case it is closely tied to the Easter season and is usually found in local bakeries and pastry shops around that time.
