About the drive
Skyline Drive runs north to south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through Shenandoah National Park. It starts at Front Royal and ends at Rockfish Gap, where the Blue Ridge Parkway picks up. Mileposts count from 0 in the north to 105 in the south, and park maps use them for every stop.
The speed limit is 35 mph in most places, and the National Park Service says the full length takes about three hours on a clear day. Deer, black bears and wild turkeys cross the road often, so pull fully off the road at an overlook if you want to watch them. Marys Rock Tunnel at mile 32.2 has a 12'8" clearance, which matters for RVs and trailers.
Big Meadows near mile 51 is the largest developed area, with a visitor center, lodge and wayside. Most park facilities open in March and close by late November, and parts of the drive close in bad weather, so check park alerts before you go.
