About the drive
The Native American Scenic Byway follows the Missouri River through central South Dakota into North Dakota, crossing the lands of four Lakota tribes: Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock. FHWA notes the memorials, museums and sacred sites along it that tell history from the Native American point of view.
Highway 1806 carries much of the route along the river, from Big Bend Dam at Fort Thompson to Fort Pierre, and from Mobridge north toward Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation.
Much of the byway crosses tribal land. Respect posted rules, and ask locally before visiting cultural or sacred sites.
