About the drive

The Millstone Valley Scenic Byway follows the Millstone River through central New Jersey, mostly in Somerset County. The Delaware and Raritan Canal runs through most of it, with Canal Road on one side and River Road on the other.

Canal villages keep their bridge tender houses: Griggstown's is now the byway's headquarters, open weekends from spring into early fall, and Blackwells Mills has a tender's house and wooden bridge. Near Kingston is Rockingham, George Washington's last wartime headquarters.

The drive is about 45 minutes; the canal towpath alongside is popular for walking and cycling.
