Coconut macaroons are simple to make: sweetened shredded coconut is mixed with egg whites and sugar, sometimes with sweetened condensed milk, then scooped into mounds and baked until the edges and peaks brown. They are often dipped or drizzled in chocolate. Because most contain no flour, they are a traditional Passover sweet.
Macaroons are different from macarons. A macaroon is a rustic coconut cookie, while a macaron is a smooth, piped French almond meringue sandwich cookie. Older almond-based macaroons gave both cookies their similar names.
