Kitchen Safety Basics

Safe bakers are happy bakers. In this lesson you will learn which jobs belong to your grown-up and what to do when something goes wrong.

You will learn

  • Which jobs belong to your grown-up
  • What to do about spills and burns
  • How to stay safe with raw dough and allergies

What you need

  • Oven mitts
  • A clean cloth
  • Your grown-up

Steps

  1. Know the grown-up jobsHot, sharp and electric jobs are always grown-up jobs, at every age. That means the oven, stove, microwave, toaster, hot pans and boiling water. It also means sharp knives, graters, electric mixers, blenders and food processors. You still have lots of jobs, like measuring, stirring and decorating.
  2. Meet the oven mittsOven mitts are thick, padded gloves that protect hands from heat. Your grown-up uses dry mitts, because wet ones let heat through. Keep your hands off anything from the oven until your grown-up says it is cool.
  3. Clean up spillsIf something spills, tell your grown-up. If it is not hot, like milk or flour, wipe it up right away so nobody slips. If it is hot, or if glass breaks, step back and let your grown-up clean it up.
  4. If you get a burnIf you touch something hot, tell your grown-up right away. Hold the spot under cool running water for at least 10 minutes, not ice. Your grown-up will check whether it needs more care.
  5. Clean hands, no raw doughWash your hands first, and wash them again after touching raw egg. No tasting the raw dough or batter. Dough is a thick mix you can shape, and batter is a runny one you can pour. Raw flour and raw egg can carry germs that make people sick.
  6. Check for allergiesAn allergy is when someone's body reacts badly to a food, like peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs or wheat. Check every ingredient with your grown-up before you bake or share.
