About the drive
The Sandhills Journey follows Nebraska Highway 2 for 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance, through the rolling, grass-covered dunes of the Nebraska Sandhills and the ranch towns along the railroad.
Towns are far apart: Broken Bow, Dunning, Halsey, Thedford, Mullen and Hyannis. Near Halsey, the Nebraska National Forest's Bessey district is a hand-planted forest in the middle of the grassland.
Visit Nebraska puts the drive at about four and a half hours. Fuel up when you can. We haven't verified a complete route line for this byway, so the map shows the stops only.
