About the drive
The Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail follows Ohio's Lake Erie shore. FHWA describes 12,000 years of history along it, with the Lake Erie Islands, coastal marshes, prairies, rivers and waterfalls.
Maritime museums, restored freighters and lighthouses such as Marblehead tell the shipping story. Historic sites cover the Western Reserve, the Underground Railroad and the War of 1812.
FHWA suggests about eight hours of driving, or three to four days with stops. Port Clinton and Sandusky are the jumping-off points for the islands.
