About the drive
The Flaming Gorge - Green River Basin Scenic Byway starts just west of Rock Springs and heads south on US 191 into red-rock country, high desert and the Green River basin, around Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The reservoir, part of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, is 91 miles long and reaches into Utah.
Overlooks such as Firehole Canyon explain how the landscape was carved. John Wesley Powell led an expedition down the Green River in the 1860s; Expedition Island in the town of Green River remembers it.
FHWA suggests two to two and a half hours of driving; Travel Wyoming says to expect at least three. Add time to boat or fish on the reservoir.
