Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat milk?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little: many dogs can't digest much milk sugar and get diarrhea.

Also called or found in: lactose, evaporated milk, condensed milk

Why it matters

Pets have little lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk, so milk and dairy can cause diarrhea or other stomach upset (ASPCA).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Milk baked into a treat is a small amount. A bowl of milk, condensed milk or a milkshake is a different story.
