Fats and Dairy

Butter, cream and cheese aren't poisons, but rich food is a common trigger for pancreatitis in dogs.

Fat and pancreatitis

The Merck Veterinary Manual names eating table scraps and other unsuitable food as a common risk factor for pancreatitis in dogs. It lists Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds and Poodles among breeds where pancreatitis is more common.

  • Signs can include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, belly pain and diarrhea (Merck).

Dairy

Dogs make little lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar, so milk and dairy can cause diarrhea (ASPCA).

In the kitchen

Softening butter, cream cheese frosting, pastry dough and cheese breads are the usual temptations. A taste of plain yogurt or a bit of cooked egg in a baked treat is a very different thing.
