Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat marshmallows?

Use caution

Short answer: Only if they aren't sugar-free, and only one: marshmallows are sugar, and sugar-free ones may contain xylitol.

Also called or found in: marshmallow fluff, sugar-free marshmallows

Why it matters

Regular marshmallows are sugar and gelatin with nothing a dog needs (UC Davis, 10% guideline).

Sugar-free candies and desserts are where xylitol turns up (FDA).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Sweet potato casserole, s'mores and rice cereal treats bring butter and chocolate too.
