Frostings and Decorations

Party cakes are where sugar, fat, chocolate and xylitol all meet. Here's what to watch.

Frosting

Buttercream and cream cheese frosting are mostly sugar and fat. Fatty foods are a pancreatitis risk factor in dogs (Merck). Chocolate frosting carries theobromine. Sugar-free frosting may contain xylitol (FDA).

Sprinkles, candy and marshmallows

Most are sugar. Chocolate sprinkles carry theobromine, and sugar-free candies and marshmallows may contain xylitol.

Food coloring

We found no official veterinary poison listing for food coloring. The frosting and candy it's in are the bigger concern.

Inedible decorations

Cake toppers, candles, picks and wires can be swallowed. Clear them away before the cake gets near your dog.
