Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat heavy cream?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a lick: cream is very fatty, and dairy upsets many dogs' stomachs.

Also called or found in: whipping cream, whipped cream

Why it matters

Pets have little lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar, so dairy can cause diarrhea (ASPCA).

Fatty foods are on the AVMA's list of foods that can harm pets, and Merck names table scraps as a common pancreatitis risk factor.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Whipped cream and cream fillings are sugar and fat. Sweetened 'lite' toppings can contain sugar substitutes, so read the label.
