Can dogs eat food coloring?

Use caution

Short answer: Only the trace in a decoration: we found no official veterinary poison listing for food coloring.

Also called or found in: gel coloring, food dye

Why it matters

Food coloring isn't on the ASPCA's or AVMA's lists of foods that harm dogs. Those lists aren't complete.

Colored foods are usually frosting, candy and sprinkles, so the sugar, fat and possible xylitol matter more than the color (FDA, Merck).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Bright colors aren't a treat for your dog. Skip them in dog bakes.
