Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat eggs (raw vs cooked)?

Use caution

Short answer: Only cooked: raw eggs can carry germs, while egg baked into a treat isn't on the poison lists.

Also called or found in: raw eggs, egg whites, egg yolks

Why it matters

Raw eggs can carry Salmonella and E. coli, which can sicken dogs and the people around them. Raw eggs also contain an enzyme that can interfere with how a vitamin is absorbed (ASPCA).

The FDA's flour safety advice also warns that raw eggs in batter and dough can carry harmful bacteria.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Bake egg-based dog treats all the way through. Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories.
