Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat cream cheese?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a dab: cream cheese is mostly fat, and dairy upsets some dogs.

Also called or found in: cream cheese frosting, cheesecake

Why it matters

Dairy can cause diarrhea in pets because they make little lactase (ASPCA). Fatty foods are a pancreatitis risk factor in dogs (Merck).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Cream cheese frosting is sugar, butter and cream cheese, and sometimes vanilla extract. Cheesecake usually adds a crust and toppings too.
