Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat butter?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a trace: butter isn't poisonous, but rich, fatty food is a common pancreatitis trigger.

Also called or found in: margarine, shortening

Why it matters

The Merck Veterinary Manual names eating table scraps and other unsuitable food as a common risk factor for pancreatitis in dogs, and lists Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds and Poodles among breeds with more pancreatitis.

The AVMA and FDA list fatty foods among foods that can harm pets.

What owners may notice

With pancreatitis: loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, belly pain and diarrhea (Merck).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

A stick of butter left out to soften is a common counter theft. Butter-heavy pastry, shortbread and frosting aren't dog treats.
