Baking tools for this recipe

Instructions

  1. Gather about 24 bendy straws, straighten them and stand them upright in a tall glass or jar, held snug with a rubber band so they stay upright.
  2. Sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water and let it bloom 5 minutes.
  3. Warm the juice, sugar and corn syrup over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
  4. Remove from heat, stir in the bloomed gelatin until smooth, and add the coloring.
  5. Use a funnel or squeeze bottle to fill each straw nearly to the top with the warm liquid.
  6. Refrigerate upright for at least 4 hours or overnight until completely firm.
  7. Run a skewer along each straw to loosen the worm, then squeeze the straw gently from end to end to push the worm out.
  8. Roll the worms in the sugar and citric acid, if using.

Tips

  • Make half the batch in a second color for two-tone worms.
  • Keep the gelatin warm while filling or it will clog the straws.
  • Worms get chewier if air-dried for a few hours on a rack.
