1. Wash your hands first.

Use soap and warm water. Scrub for as long as it takes to hum Happy Birthday twice.

2. Bake with your grown-up.

Ask before you start, and stay together in the kitchen until clean-up is done.

3. Get ready to bake.

Tie back long hair, roll up your sleeves and put on an apron.

4. Hot, sharp and electric jobs are always grown-up jobs.

That means the oven, stove, microwave, toaster, mixer, blender, food processor, sharp knives and graters, plus hot pans, hot trays and boiling water. Hot things stay hot after the oven is off, so only your grown-up moves them.

5. Stand on something steady.

Use a sturdy step stool to reach the counter, and ask your grown-up to check that it is steady. Never stand on a chair.

6. No tasting the raw dough or batter.

Dough is the thick mix for cookies. Batter is the runny mix for cakes and muffins. Raw flour and raw egg can carry germs that make you sick, so wash your hands after you touch raw egg.

7. Check every ingredient with your grown-up.

Some people have a food allergy, which means a food can make their body very sick. Read every label together.

8. Clean as you go.

If something spills, tell your grown-up. If it is not hot, like milk or flour, wipe it up right away so no one slips. If it is hot, or if glass breaks, step back and let your grown-up clean it up. Wash your hands again when you are done.
