Bake one of these

What you need

  • Baking sheets lined with parchment paper
  • A piping bag with a round tip for each filling (a bag that squeezes filling out through a nozzle)
  • Small bowls
  • Flavor ideas like cocoa powder, cinnamon, food coloring and sprinkles
  • Paper and markers for a menu and signs

Steps

  1. Bake the shellsWash your hands first and check every ingredient with your grown-up. Make the shells, keeping them all the same size so they pair up. Your grown-up handles the oven. No tasting the raw dough, and wash your hands again after you touch raw egg or dough.
  2. Match pairsWhen the shells are cool, line them up. Match each one with a partner of the same size.
  3. Flavor the fillingsYour grown-up runs the electric mixer to make the buttercream, a fluffy butter and sugar frosting. Add ingredients only while the mixer is off, and keep fingers, hair and spoons away from the beaters. Split the buttercream into bowls and flavor each: cocoa powder for chocolate, a pinch of cinnamon for spice, a drop of color for fun.
  4. FillPipe a coin of filling onto the flat side of one shell. Press its partner on top until the filling just reaches the edge.
  5. Roll the edgesRoll the sides of some cookies in a bowl of sprinkles. The soft filling grabs them and holds on.
  6. Open the shopName each flavor, write a menu and set up a counter. Customers pay with pretend money or compliments.

Make it yours

  • Pipe two colors side by side for a two-tone filling
  • Invent a mystery flavor from checked ingredients, tell anyone with an allergy what is inside, and let customers guess
  • Design a box for takeout orders
