Fondant Calculator

How much fondant for an 8-inch cake? About 24 oz for an 8-inch round 4 inches high, one standard package.

Add the cakes or tiers you're covering and get the ounces of rolled fondant, the grams, and how many 24 oz packages to buy, with extra for decorations if you want it.

How to use it

  1. Pick each cake or tier: round (3 or 4 inches high), square or sheet.
  2. Add extra for decorations if you'll cut shapes or flowers from the same fondant.
  3. Buy the packages shown and keep what you don't use wrapped airtight.

How it works

Amounts come from Wilton's published chart of fondant needed to cover each cake size, a manufacturer's figure and our starting point.

Tiers are added together; the chart covers the cake only, so decorations are extra.

Sizes aren't interpolated. Wilton's 18 in round at 4 in high is left out because its listed amount is smaller than the 16 in.

Assumptions and limits

  • Fondant rolled about ⅛ in (3 mm) thick.
  • Cakes covered in a thin coat of buttercream first.
  • Standard heights from the chart: 4 in rounds and squares, 2 in sheets.
