Can dogs eat white chocolate?

Keep away

Short answer: No. White chocolate has almost no theobromine, but it's sugar and fat dogs don't need.

Why it matters

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists white chocolate at about 1.1 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce, a negligible amount.

Its high fat content is the bigger worry. Merck notes the fat in chocolate products can trigger pancreatitis in susceptible dogs.

If your dog ate some

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

White chocolate chips are often mixed with dark or milk chocolate in cookies and bark. If your dog ate a mix, tell the poison line about every chocolate.
