Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat wheat flour?

Use caution

Short answer: Only baked: cooked wheat flour is common in dog foods, but raw flour can carry germs.

Also called or found in: all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, raw flour, cookie dough, cake batter

Why it matters

The FDA says raw flour can carry harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, and that cooking is the reliable way to kill them. Its advice is written for people, but the same flour is on the counter.

Tufts veterinary nutritionists say grain allergies are rare in pets and there's no reliable evidence that grains as a group harm dogs.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Bake dog treats all the way through. Don't let your dog lick raw batter or raw dough.
