Can dogs eat tea?

Keep away

Short answer: No. A lick is unlikely to matter, but tea leaves and tea bags contain caffeine.

Also called or found in: tea bags, matcha, green tea, chai

Why it matters

Pet Poison Helpline lists tea bags among the caffeine sources that can cause serious poisoning, while saying a lick or two of tea is unlikely to poison most pets.

The AVMA lists tea among foods that can harm dogs.

What owners may notice

Restlessness, vomiting, racing heart, tremors (Pet Poison Helpline).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

Matcha and chai baking, and tea-infused syrups and frostings, bring caffeine with them.
