Can dogs eat sweet potato?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, plain cooked sweet potato in small amounts is fine for most dogs.

Why it matters

Sweet potato isn't on the ASPCA's or AVMA's lists of foods that harm dogs. UC Davis says vegetables are good treat options for many dogs.

The FDA has investigated illnesses linked to commercial jerky treats, including sweet potato jerky. Homemade plain sweet potato is a different product.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Sweet potato pie and casseroles add sugar, butter, marshmallows and spices. Plain baked sweet potato is the dog-friendly version.
