Can dogs eat salt?

Use caution

Short answer: Only the pinch that seasons a treat: large amounts can be deadly, and salt dough ornaments are a real holiday risk.

Also called or found in: salt dough, play dough, pretzel salt

Why it matters

The ASPCA says too much salt can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures and even death.

Pet Poison Helpline lists homemade salt dough ornaments and salt play dough as common sources. It warns that salt should never be used to make a pet vomit.

What owners may notice

Vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, wobbling, disorientation, tremors and seizures (ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate it straight from the box, can or salt shaker, or a salt dough ornament, call now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

Hang salt dough ornaments high, and keep homemade play dough away from dogs.
