Can dogs eat rice flour?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, rice flour in a baked treat is fine for most dogs.

Also called or found in: brown rice flour, gluten-free flour

Why it matters

Rice flour isn't on the ASPCA's or AVMA's lists of foods that harm dogs, and Tufts says grains as a group aren't harmful.

Grain-free or gluten-free doesn't make a treat healthier for a dog. Tufts notes gluten intolerance in dogs is extremely rare.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories.
