Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat raw yeast dough?

Toxic: call for help

Short answer: No. Raw yeast dough is an emergency: it rises inside the stomach and makes alcohol.

Also called or found in: bread dough, pizza dough, roll dough, sourdough

Why it matters

Yeast keeps working in a warm stomach, so the dough expands and stretches the stomach (Merck, ASPCA).

Fermenting yeast also makes ethanol, which is absorbed into the blood and causes alcohol poisoning (Merck, ASPCA).

What owners may notice

Trying to vomit without bringing anything up, a swollen belly, tiredness, then wobbling and disorientation as the alcohol takes effect (Merck).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

Rising dough on the counter is the risk. Proof bread, pizza and roll dough where your dog can't reach, and keep doors closed.
