Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat pumpkin (plain vs pie filling)?

Use caution

Short answer: Only plain pumpkin. Pumpkin pie filling is sweetened and spiced.

Also called or found in: canned pumpkin, pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie filling, pumpkin pie

Why it matters

Plain cooked pumpkin isn't on the ASPCA's or AVMA's lists of foods that harm dogs.

Pie filling adds sugar and spices like nutmeg. Pet Poison Helpline says the nutmeg in a recipe is very unlikely to cause serious poisoning, but large amounts can.

'Sugar-free' or 'light' pie fillings and desserts are where xylitol can turn up (FDA).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Check the can: '100% pumpkin' and 'pumpkin pie filling' look alike on the shelf. Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories.
